Most women don’t think about safety until a moment forces them to.
For me, it happened when I moved back to Australia to retire — leaving behind the sense of preparedness I’d grown used to while travelling overseas, and the tools I once relied on to feel secure on the road.
Suddenly, every drive, every walk to my caravan, every long stretch of highway felt different.
Australia has strict laws around self-defence weapons.
While certain professionals may be legally authorised to carry specialised equipment, everyday women — raising families or travelling solo — are not. For most of us, carrying weapons simply isn’t legal, which means safety must look different.
I was travelling alone in my caravan.
Just me.
Open roads.
Long evenings.
Silence.
And a growing need to feel prepared — legally, safely, confidently. I missed my chosen weapon from the US. Allowed to bear arms during my 15 years stay had proven to be a luxury.
What I discovered was this:
